High fructose corn syrup — commonly abbreviated HFCS — is an extremely sweet substance manufactured from corn. Many food companies use it because subsidies make it an extremely cheap sweetener. High fructose corn syrup is a heavily processed simple sugar. What this means is that when you consume foods that contain high fructose corn syrup a huge amount of glucose is dumped into your blood stream at once. This is good if you are about to go on a long distance run and burn a lot of calories, but bad if you are just relaxing in your home. If you don’t burn these calories, your body transforms them into fat.
