What is SPF Protection?

You have heard it before--about a million times. From the time you were a toddler to now, you have heard about the need for SPF. Chances are, even with as often as you have heard about it, you don't even know what the letters S P F stand for.

SPF is short for sun protection factor. Sun protection factor is not a magical, everlasting shield against the sun. It is a temporary barrier between your skin and the dangerous UV rays that the sun emits. Your skin has a certain threshold against UV rays. Whether it is ten minutes or an hour, there is a certain amount of time that you can be exposed to dangerous UV rays without burning. Each bottle of SPF has a number and that number represents the additional amount of time you can stay in the sun with SPF. An SPF of 8 allows you to stay in the sun 8 times as long as you could without it.

Remember, SPF protects you against UV rays, not the sun itself. That means that you must wear SPF protection even on cloudy days because there is still risk of UV ray exposure.
