Skin Care TipsSkin CareHow Does Botox Work?Botox is a name that many people have heard, but you may not understand exactly how it works. Learn more about this cosmetic procedure and how it can help you look younger. What is Botox?Botox is the brand name for a toxin created by clostridium botulinum, which is most commonly known for causing botulism. However, used in small amounts, Botox can be used in the treatment of blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking), strabismus (lazy eye), and facial wrinkles. How does Botox treat wrinkles? When injected into a muscle, Botox causes the muscle to weaken by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. When a face muscle can't contract, the wrinkles in that area will relax and soften. This type of treatment can reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth. It does not, however, affect wrinkles caused by sun damage or gravity. Is Botox a permanent solution to wrinkles?Botox can only prevent muscle contractions for four to six months. The wrinkles will start to re-appear as muscle activity returns to normal. Botox can be administered again at this point. Botox can cause temporary bruising, headaches, or eyelid drooping. It should not be administered to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or anyone who has a neurological disorder.
