Many people try to eliminate fat from their diets when they're trying to lose weight. But some fats are good for your body and are especially important for healthy skin.

Essential fatty acids like omega-3s and omega-6s are fats that your body needs but can't produce on its own. These essential fats are required to build healthy cell membranes. They also help produce the skin's natural oil barrier, which is critical in keeping skin hydrated, plump, and young-looking. If you find that your skin is dry, inflamed, or prone to blackheads and whiteheads, you may not be getting enough of the good fats in your diet.

Taking care of your body and improving your skin naturally means having a healthy balance of omega-3s and omega-6s in your diet. Unfortunately, most of us consume too many omega-6 fatty acids and not enough omega-3s. You should be consuming four times as many omega-3s as omega-6s. Look for ways to replace sources of omega-6s with foods rich in omega-3s.

Foods with Omega-3s (Eat more of these!)

  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Flax (seeds and oil)
  • Safflower oil
  • Walnuts
  • Sardines
  • Soy
  • Fortified eggs

Foods with Omega-6s (Eat some-but less-of these)

  • Baked goods
  • Cooking oils
  • Poultry
  • Grains

Healthy skin is a natural byproduct of a well-balanced diet. While you should stay away from saturated fats, look for ways to incorporate healthy essential fatty acids into your daily meals.
