Exercise Leads to Healthier Aging

Four new studies published in the Archives of Internal Medicine verify that the more exercise you get, the healthier you will be in your advanced age. Specifically, exercise has been shown to improve heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, arthritis, and lung disease.

The first study focused on female subjects and found that any exercise during middle age, even physical activity of a moderate intensity, lowered the risk for heart trouble, chronic diseases, and cognitive impairment. Dr. Qi Sun, the lead author of the study, said, "In terms of magnitude, walking and other moderate activities were almost equivalent to the benefit gained from more vigorous physical activity." In the second study, women who exercised at a high intensity four days a week were found to have stronger bones and a reduced chance of falling compared to those who participated in relaxation programs, although the physically active subjects did not have a lower risk of heart disease. The third study supported the idea that any exercise, whether of a moderate or high intensity, will reduce your risk of cognitive impairment as you get older.

In the fourth and final study, women who participated in resistance training showed improved cognitive skills in the areas of attention and conflict resolution, as well as stronger quadriceps. However, researchers also discovered that the subjects experienced reduction in brain volume, which is typically linked with poorer cognitive function. This is an issue that requires more study, according to the authors.

Accompanying the studies was commentary explaining that most physical ailments in your advanced age will result in some part from a lack of physical activity. "The bottom line," said Sun, "is that, no matter what, if you can you should do some physical activity."
