Acai Berries and Acai Berry Juice - What Are the Health Benefits?

Acai berries and acai berry juices are showing up in infomercials and health food stores all over. Marketers rave that the acai berry is a superfood with magical powers ranging from anti aging to dramatic weight loss, but have they gone too far? What is the acai berry and are there any real health benefits you can expect from consuming the berries or acai berry juice?

What is the acai berry?

The acai berry is a small reddish, purple fruit that is native to Central and South America. It's a relative of the blueberry, cranberry and other dark purple fruits.

What health benefits do acai berries and acai berry juices provide?

Acai berries contain substances called anthocyanins and flavonoids, which are two types of powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants such as these do carry health benefits as they can help defend the body against stress and diseases caused or aggravated by stress. They also help the body's cell protection system.

Eating acai berries, acai berry juice and other foods rich in antioxidants may interfere with aging and the disease process because they neutralize free radicals in the body. By lessening the destructive power of free radicals, antioxidants may also help reduce the risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

Acai berries, like other dark purple fruits and berries, have the potential to provide substantial health benefits.

Can acai berries help with weight loss?

The acai berry is a small purple fruit that is loaded with antioxidants. The berries, along with acai berry juices, are being marketed as potential aides for weight loss. While antioxidants are believed to affect aging and reduce the risk for certain diseases, is weight loss one of the health benefits that should be associated with acai berries and acai berry juice?

Although acai berry is an ingredient in many popular weight loss products, there have been few studies that have focused specifically on whether acai berries promote weight loss. Most of the research on acai berries and other superfoods has been focused on the properties of the antioxidants contained in the fruit. While berries have not yet been proven to have extraordinary weight loss benefits over other similar fruits, a diet rich in antioxidants does seem to promote better health. Consuming acai berries or acai berry juices as part of a healthy diet is certainly not a bad idea.

Do acai berries and acai berry juice have any negative side effects?

As with any food, there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction. People who have pollen allergies should consider avoiding acai berries. Similarly, if you have a known hypersensitivity to fruits similar to the acai berry, such as cranberries or blueberries, you may not want to consume acai berries or acai berry juice. For most people, however, acai berries should be considered safe in moderate amounts.
